Martison Lake

A trolling approach is the best means of surveying the lake. Take note of any deeper areas, weedbeds / weedlines, or areas where the bottom content changes. Two feeder creeks with deeper water (8 to12 feet) should be checked out, as do a series of sandbars / points separating bays and a mid-lake narrows which divide the lake into two large basins.
Martison lake pikeSurprisingly, the deepest water in Martison Lake is just 7 feet deep (and there isn't much of that !) Shorelines taper gradually to the 6-foot contour, there is little weedgrowth, and no islands or shoals. The water is heavily tannin stained and lures disappear from view within a foot of the surface.
Walleyes often holdin or just out from two in-flowing creeks near the camp, so check them out. Trolling body baits that dig into the bottom intermittently seems to draw strikes from fish that sometimes refuse jigs cast those same locations.

Two very productive spots were boulder-strewn shorelines and smooth, hard-bottomed areas littered with brush and stones. The chattering of crankbaits over the rounded rocks on the bottom will signal that an area that deserves a closer look. Oh, you will get "hung up" often and landed more than a few sticks, but perseverance will pay off with great walleye fishing.

Trolling across Martison's main-lake points in about five feet of water has proven very effective. Moving baits up onto the bar, then off the other side, will result in aggressive strikes on almost every pass. Where two points came together and the narrows, walleyes are generally caught on the downwind side, in the lee of the points or right in the channel itself. Where sparse weedbeds were found, ripping a crankbait or jig right through the weeds will prompt solids strikes from both walleyes and pike.
